PostSubject: Euro Focus to US in 2011 and 09 F150 delayed   Fri Jun 20, 2008 8:06 pm

If you’re a truck lover, read this piece with caution—it’s not good news for you. But, if you’ve been panting in anticipation of European Focus, you may want to skip ahead a bit.

The transformation of the American automotive landscape from a truck to a car world is accelerating at the same rapid pace as gas prices at the pump, prompting another round of actions by domestic automakers.

Ford is eliminating the second shift of 2008 F-150 pickup production at its Kansas City, Missouri, plant starting August 11, at which point it will start building the all-new 2009 F-150 on a single shift. The Dearborn plant, which was to start building the new truck in July, will not commence assembly until September.

2009 Ford F-150 Delayed

As a result, the on-sale date of the new truck is being pushed back two months, to late fall, to give Ford more time to sell down old inventory. In May, Ford had a 142-day supply of the full-size pickup, according to Ward’s Automotive Reports.

Production cutbacks also are occurring at the plants that make the Ford Expedition, Lincoln Navigator, Ford Explorer, and Mercury Mountaineer.

On a more positive note, Ford is adding a third shift of Ford Escape, Mercury Mariner, and Mazda Tribute mid-size SUV production in Kansas City. The Oakville, Ontario, plant that makes the Ford Edge, Lincoln MKX, and new Ford Flex also will add a third shift.

In the push to get more fuel-efficient small cars into the marketplace, Ford is adding a third shift in the body and paint shop of the Wayne, Michigan, plant that makes the Ford Focus.

Finally, European Focus for North America

The automaker also confirms that sedan and hatchback versions of the third-generation European Focus will be sold in North America for the 2011 model year. While the rest of the world currently sells the second generation of the compact car, North Americans have had to make do with a refreshed version of the original car.

Production of the next-gen Focus will begin in late 2010, the same timeframe as the introduction of the new Ford Fiesta B-segment car that also will be available as a sedan or hatchback.

IMO, the euro ford focus looks more like the old one. The tail end is kind of awkward though.

I think the delay of the F150 is just the begining of a renewed movement towards the purchase of smaller truck such as the Ranger or Colorado.

especially with gas prices. About the Colorado, companies have been using them since the start because of their somewhat better gas mileage.
